The South of Market Area (SOMA) of San Francisco was once home to warehouses and industrial factories but has been transformed into an area filled with historic conversion lofts, modern condominium buildings and a seemingly random distribution of remaining industrial and commercial uses. Much of the neighborhood and its homes for sale are zoned as mixed-use, with the majority of San Francisco's live-work lofts found in this part of town as well.

The South of Market Area is filled with a fascinating collection of historic buildings, and in recent years has developed more of the infrastructure that people expect in a residential neighborhood, including things like grocery stores and updated parks that provide plenty of opportunities for outdoor play and relaxation.
SOMA is a relatively flat neighborhood, with much of it resting on bay in-fill. Because of this, much of the South of Market Area shows up as being in a liquefaction zone. It really isn't something you can avoid if you are looking at homes for sale in SOMA. I suppose, though, you can take solace in having some of the warmest and sunniest weather in San Francisco.
There are very few free standing single-family homes in SOMA, with the overwhelming majority of property being condominiums, with a smattering of tenancy-in-common buildings as well. Depending on where you are in the neighborhood (it spans a fairly large area for a San Francisco neighborhood), the options for public transit and freeway access are both pretty good. Several of the neighborhood streets serve as feeder streets to both 101 and 80 on-ramps and can be fairly frustrating to navigate during rush hour because of the heavy traffic volumes.
Folsom Street is perhaps one of the more famous neighborhood streets, and hosts a street festival and fair every September that is filled with several hundred thousand nearly-naked or naked individuals celebrating their diverse sexualities and interests. Probably not the street to live on if you're easily offended, unless you plan on taking a roadtrip the last weekend of every September!
